Many underserved and homeless people in the Birmingham area will receive teeth cleanings, fillings and extractions at no cost as part of the fifth annual UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry.
“This is something we decided to do because we know there is a tremendous need for dental care for low-income adults,” said Conan Davis, DMD, assistant dean for Community Collaborations and Public Health. “It’s taken a good bit of effort behind the scenes to get this going, but we are so thankful to all of our volunteers who make this event successful.”
UAB Dentistry Cares helps raise awareness of the increasing difficulty low-income adults face in accessing critical dental services. These oral health barriers can elevate chronic health conditions, reduce employability and lead to the preventable use of costly acute care in hospital emergency rooms.
