UAB Homecoming, “Blazers in the Magic City,” is Oct. 14-20

Homecoming Week 2018 highlights include a free comedy show, the famed Gurney Derby, a Hoops Season Tip-Off and UAB Football vs. North Texas.

homecoming 2017 2The University of Alabama at Birmingham will celebrate Homecoming from Oct. 14-20, featuring the Hoops Season Tip-Off and UAB Football vs. North Texas.

This year’s theme is “Blazers in the Magic City.” UAB’s traditional Homecoming events include the famed Gurney Derby at noon Wednesday, Oct. 17, and the UAB Homecoming Parade at noon Friday, Oct. 19.

The annual Homecoming Comedy Show with “Saturday Night Live” writer Anna Drezen is at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Hill Student Center Ballroom. The show is free and open to the public.

The Hoops Season Tip-Off will feature UAB Men’s Basketball vs. Georgia in an exhibition game and a UAB Women’s Basketball championship celebration, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Bartow Arena. Proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross in support of disaster relief for the California wildfires.

Support cancer research at the Blazer Bolt for Brain Cancer, Saturday, Oct. 20. Register at 8 a.m. for the flat, fast 5K course through scenic Homewood, with a 1-mile fun run/walk at 9 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the UAB Division of Neuro-Oncology and Children’s of Alabama Neuro-Oncology for research of adult and pediatric brain cancer.

The 220-member-strong Marching Blazers will perform with the UAB Alumni Band during halftime. It is open to all UAB graduates who were members of the band. The Marching Blazers will present a portion of its 2018 field show, “Rockstar,” featuring music from 1980s rock bands.

Winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition will be announced at halftime. Sponsored by the UAB National Alumni Society, this tradition recognizes outstanding male and female students on campus who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership, campus and community involvement, and overall enthusiasm for UAB. Each winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and serve as an ambassador of UAB in the coming year. The first alternates will receive $1,000 scholarships. Finalists are selected through two rounds of interviews and a student vote held during Homecoming Week.
