The Informatics Institute at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will host a major professional conference with an eye toward how informatics research will help drive the field of precision medicine.
“Gathering, storing, protecting and ultimately using large amounts of information is the key to being able to treat an individual based on their personal response to disease,” said James Cimino, M.D., director of the UAB Informatics Institute.
The 16th Annual Conference of the Midsouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society will be held March 28-30 at the Hilton Birmingham at UAB hotel.
“MCBIOS ’19 is a premier annual meeting for bioinformatics researchers, professionals and trainees in the middle and Southern areas of the United States,” said Jake Y. Chen, Ph.D., chief bioinformatics officer and chair of the conference. “It is a major venue for informaticians to exchange late-breaking research results, learn technological trends and network in the region.”
The research theme for the conference is Informatics for Precision Medicine.
“Precision medicine is promoting exciting changes in how we deliver health care and treat disease in the modern era, and one of the major components of precision medicine is information. We are pleased to be co-sponsoring the event,” said Matt Might, Ph.D., director of the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute and a conference co-chair.
Attendees will share and discuss novel ideas on emerging topics related to genomics, bioinformatics, biocomputing, medical informatics, algorithmic/database development, applied statistics, bioengineering, data sciences, and their relevant precision medicine applications in disease and consumer health. The conference will focus on a wide range of bioinformatics research and development, which involves the development of novel computational techniques, software tools and databases to help manage, query and interpret biomedical data.
This annual event has been organized by MCBIOS and will be co-sponsored by the UAB School of Medicine, the UAB Informatics Institute, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences, and various other co-sponsors.
The pre-conference symposium, UAB’s third Annual Transformative and Translational Informatics Symposium, offers UAB faculty, postdoc trainees and graduate students an opportunity to learn about latest informatics research and applications in biomedical sciences at UAB. The symposium will feature talks on scientific findings and how they were enabled with bioinformatics and functional genomics techniques, including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics and various applications of next-generation sequencing.
