Amit Momaya, M.D., tends to UAB basketball player Rachael Childress at the new Sports Medicine Clinic.Collegiate athletes and weekend warriors have a new option for tending to the injuries that can come from a long season or an intense pickup game. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine has opened a new sports medicine clinic at UAB Highlands Hospital targeted at college-age and older athletes.
“We’re excited to expand upon our existing sports medicine offerings,” said Rob Crabtree, executive administrator for UAB Orthopaedics. “This new clinic will be geared more toward mature young athletes and weekend warriors. This includes our UAB students who participate in athletics as well as others who may incur acute general orthopaedic injuries, whether in competition or in daily life.”
The clinic is on the first floor at UAB Highlands Hospital. It features seven exam rooms and has its own X-ray and ultrasound capability. The clinic is staffed by physicians and other medical professionals trained in sports medicine.
Will Brabston, M.D., has served as a team physician for high school and college programs. He did a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Dartmouth and a fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
Sara Gould, M.D., is the team physician for the UAB women’s basketball team. She completed a fellowship in non-operative sports medicine at North Shore University Hospital System and has provided medical coverage for the NBA, the New York Yankees, New York Rangers and high school teams.

Stephen Gould, M.D., did his residency at New York Hospital in joint diseases and a fellowship with American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham. He is a team physician for UAB Athletics and was a Division 1 collegiate lacrosse player.
Kennieth McCollough, Jr., M.D., trained in non-operative treatment of orthopaedic and sports medicine. He began his career as an athletic trainer and physical therapist before completing medical school. He did a sports medicine fellowship with American Sports Medicine Institute and is a team physician for UAB.
