Seven UAB students receive top awards at Alabama Academy of Science competition

Students receive recognition for research posters and papers at statewide presentation.

Undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham competed with their peers across Alabama at the 96th annual Alabama Academy of Science Awards on Feb. 20-22. Students participated in poster and paper presentations. Winners from the UAB College of Arts and Sciences include:

  • Anna Grace Ballard, a senior from New Hope, Alabama, majoring in biology, won second place in the biological sciences undergraduate paper presentation.
  • Amanda Weiner, a biology graduate student from Birmingham, won second place in the biological sciences graduate paper presentation.
  • Elizabeth Bradley, a senior from Dothan, Alabama, and an Honors College student majoring in biology, won outstanding undergraduate poster presentation in biological sciences.
  • Rachel Rock, a senior from Madison, Alabama, and an Honors College student majoring in biology, won first place in the science, technology, engineering and math paper presentation.
  • Sarah Jeanne Adkins, a biology graduate student from Bethesda, Maryland, and an Honors College alum, was recognized for an outstanding poster presentation in STEM education.
  • David Verhine, a post-baccalaureate student from Memphis, Tennessee, majoring in chemistry, and Gabrielle Richards, a junior from Dothan, Alabama, majoring in biology, were recognized for an outstanding poster presentation in STEM education.

The Alabama Academy of Science is devoted to nearly all aspects of science and science education. Alabama’s oldest science organization hosts the statewide competition each spring.
