Dr. Janyce M. Sanford has been named chair of the UAB Department of Emergency Medicine. Sanford has been serving interim chair since September 2006.

Dr. Janyce M. Sanford has been named chair of the UAB Department of Emergency Medicine. Sanford has been serving interim chair since September 2006.

“Dr. Sanford has provided wonderful leadership to the department in her interim role,” said Dr. Robert R. Rich, senior vice president and dean of the School of Medicine. “She has worked extremely well with the faculty and staff within the department and the hospital.”

Sanford has been at UAB since 1998. She was named vice chair for the department in 2005. She has served as the quality improvement director for the department since 2000, and the medical director since 2003. Prior to joining UAB, she served on the emergency department staffs at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Honolulu, Baptist Medical Center Montclair in Birmingham , Medical Center East in Birmingham and Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tenn.

A graduate of the University of Alabama, Sanford earned her medical degree at the University of South Alabama before performing residencies at University Hospital in Jacksonville and at UAB Hospital.
