BIRMINGHAM, AL — David Hoidal, chief executive officer of the UAB Health System (UABHS), has named Cynthia G. Brumfield, M.D., M.S.H.A., UAB Hospital’s chief of staff, effective March 1.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — David Hoidal, chief executive officer of the UAB Health System (UABHS), has named Cynthia G. Brumfield, M.D., M.S.H.A., UAB Hospital’s chief of staff, effective March 1.

She is the third person appointed to the post permanently, and the first woman to become chief of staff in UAB Hospital history.

Brumfield, a nationally recognized obstetrician-gynecologist, has a lengthy record of service to the hospital and UAB as a whole. A member of the UAB faculty since 1984, she is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and has been medical director of the UAB Obstetrical Service for 15 years.

“Dr. Brumfield has been active in multiple leadership, clinical and research capacities within the UAB Health System, and she is highly regarded by fellow practitioners here and elsewhere,” Hoidal said. “We’re very pleased she has accepted this appointment.”

Brumfield received her M.D. degree from the University of Mississippi, Jackson, and completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where she was administrative chief resident. She completed a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship at UAB in 1984, and a Master of Science in Health Administration degree at the UAB School of Health-Related Professions in 2002.

She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society; a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; an elected senior member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine; and a member of many other national and local medical organizations, as well as the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Her other professional contributions include being a national oral board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a peer reviewer for a number of leading medical publications in her field, including Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Journal of Maternal-Fetal Health, and American Journal of Managed Care. She has authored more the 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 1995.
