Brown Appointed to National Advisory Board

Kathleen Brown, Ph.D., professor of nursing at UAB, has been appointed to a four-year term on the board of scientific advisors for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOISH), the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NOISH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Brown is one of 15 individuals selected by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the board based on her authoritative knowledge of occupational safety and health.

Wang Named Outstanding Doctoral Student

Chenxi Wang, Ph.D., a graduate student in the Department of Biostatistics and the Section on Statistical Genetics, recently received the Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies, an award presented annually by the UAB Graduate School in recognition of the school’s most outstanding doctoral student. The award was first given in 1995 and in honor Barker, the first dean of the UAB Graduate School.

UAB Advisors Receive National Recognition

Jeanne Hutchison, Ph.D., assistant professor of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Sharon Jacobsen and Misty Altiparmak, pre-nursing advisors with UAB’s Office of General Studies, recently received 2004 advisor awards presented by the university. Hutchison received the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award, Jacobsen received the Outstanding Academic Advisor Award, and Altiparmak received the Outstanding New Advisor Award. As a result, all also were recognized by the National Academic Advising Association.

UAB Women’s Club Names Scholarship Recipient

Bettina Riley, a first semester undergraduate nursing student at UAB, has been awarded the UAB Women's Faculty Organization scholarship. The one-year $1,000 scholarship, which is renewable, will help cover the cost of tuition and books. Riley was selected to receive the scholarship based on academic merit and financial need.
