Nomination Information

The UAB School of Nursing seeks to recognize and reward outstanding graduates who are serving the nursing and nurse anesthesia profession in meaningful ways. Awards will be presented at the 2024 UAB School of Nursing Alumni Night on September 12, 2024.

Nomination Process

To nominate someone for an award, please submit the following information by August 12, 2024:

  • Nomination form.
  • Nominee’s curriculum vitae or resume.
  • One letter of support addressing why the nominee is deserving of recognition. Specific examples and stories are encouraged.

Who Should Nominate?

Nominations are welcomed from anyone who has been inspired, touched, or shaped by our alumni—a fellow nurse, fellow classmate, colleague, grateful patient, family member, peer, student, or physician.

Recognition of Recipients

Recipients and all nominees will be honored and recognized at the UAB School of Nursing Alumni Night on September 12, 2024. Recipients will also be featured on the School’s website and other school media.

Please Note: Attendance at Alumni Night is required for award recipients.


Awards Information

Jo Ann Barnett Alumni Award for Compassionate Care

Recognize BSN, NP, DNP, and/or PhD alumni working in healthcare settings focusing on one or more of the following areas:

  • Direct care in homes, clinics, doctor’s offices, etc. .
  • Bedside nursing.
  • Teaching patients, students, or nursing personnel (faculty members of Schools of Nursing are ineligible).
  • Leading others through administration, ensuring the implementation of policies and procedures positively impacts quality patient care.
  • A recipient is selected for each of the 3 categories: Direct Patient Care, Teaching (SON faculty not eligible), Leadership & Administration.
  • Provide health teaching and counseling to support the overall wellness of their patients.

The Career Achievement in Nurse Anesthesia Award

Recognize a nurse anesthesia graduate who has made significant contributions to the nurse anesthesia profession and exemplifies one or more of the following:

  • Has made significant contributions to the nurse anesthesia profession.
  • Has been actively involved in improving the quality of patient care.
  • Worked toward furthering the nurse anesthesia profession.
  • Serve as a leader and example to other new nurses.
  • Provide care to patients in the postoperative period when they are at risk of complications during recovery.

Rising Star in Nurse Anesthesia Award

Recognize a nurse anesthesia graduate within the last five years who:

  • Demonstrates excellence as a clinical practitioner.
  • Promotes quality health care and safety to patients and their families.
  • Contributes to the nurse anesthesia profession through service and outreach.
  • Actively involved in improving the quality of patient care.

Young Alumni Merit Award

Recognize alumni who have graduated within the last 10 years, have demonstrated significant accomplishment and leadership in the field of nursing, and work in a healthcare setting focusing on one or more of the following areas:

  • Execute quality clinical care in the workplace.
  • Serve as a leader and example to other new nurses.
  • Alumni must represent the characteristics as stated above and should be actively employed at the time of nomination.

Marie L. O’Koren Alumni Award for Innovation

Recognize alumni who have made innovative contributions to the field of nursing through one or more of the following avenues:

  • Teaching in a faculty role at a nursing school.
  • Investing in the future of nursing through leadership and entrepreneurship.
  • Contributing to communities through service and outreach.
  • Has developed scientific discoveries that have improved the lives of individuals.
  • Awards given in the following categories: Leadership, Clinical Care, Administration, Community Service, Scientific Discovery.

The Career Achievement in Nurse Midwifery Award

Recognize a certified nurse-midwifery graduate who has made significant contributions to the nurse-midwifery profession and exemplifies one or more of the following:

  • Has made significant contributions to the midwifery profession through professional service.
  • Has been actively involved in improving access to quality maternal/child patient care.
  • Has worked toward improving the health of mothers and babies through innovations in care delivery.
  • Has contributed to maternal/child health through the education and mentoring of CNM students and graduates.
