Making ions

There are three main ways to make ions, electrospray ionization (ESI) that transfers ions from the liquid phase to the gas phase, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) where a short laser pulse is used to "evaporate" ions from a solid surface, and electron impact ionization (EI) where high energy electrons (70 eV) ionize gaseous materials.
