UAB explores options for expanding child-care program

Written by

childcareUAB has appointed a committee to review its child-care program and provide recommendations and options for expanding facilities and services. The committee, chaired by Christopher Clifford, associate vice president of Business and Auxiliary Services, is expected to provide a report by the end of the spring semester.

UAB’s Child Development Center, in operation since 1995, is among the 5 percent of child-care centers to be accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. It provides care and instruction exclusively for the children of UAB employees. At this time, 16 teachers supervise 85 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years; its hours of operation are 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Clifford said the committee will distribute a survey to UAB employees in the coming weeks to assess overall demand for this service and acquire feedback on the UAB CDC. “This will provide the committee with some of the most valuable information needed to make recommendations, and we encourage everyone to complete it so their voice can be heard,” Clifford said.

The task force also will compare UAB’s program to best practices in the city and at other similar universities, investigate requests and complaints and make recommendations and examine options to expand the child-care benefit in a high-quality, cost-effective way.

Clifford said employees are welcome to email comments and suggestions to him at cbcliff@uab.edu or communicate with the committee members:
