Christopher Blackmon will join UAB eLearning and Professional Studies April 1 to oversee the administration, maintenance and enhancement of UAB’s new learning-management system Canvas and supporting technologies.
UAB nurse practitioner Ashley Moellinger received the Nursing Scientist Award during Cardiology 2014 — the world’s largest largest pediatric cardiology conference — for her research on postoperative feeding protocol, which she explains here. All presented abstracts are published in the January edition of the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and videos of the oral abstract presenters are online.
People who sew are needed to help installation artist Amanda Browder create two giant fabric installations for the AEIVA and ASC buildings during her residencies, April 2-5 and July 9-12.  Also needed are donations of thread and large pieces of brightly colored, non-stretch fabric,including bolts and half-bolts. Professor David Joseph, M.D., chief of pediatric urology, has been elected to a six-year term as trustee of the American Board of Urology, effective Feb. 28. Joseph joined UAB in 1986, and in 2010 he was named to the Beverly P. Head Endowed Chair in Pediatric Urology at Children’s of Alabama.
Chris Kyle, Ph.D., interim chair of anthropology, has spent five years plotting a GIS map of homicides in deadly Guerrero, Mexico. This is among the first and most ambitious attempts to understand varying ways organized criminal violence in is embedded in the community, Kyle says.
The UA System Scholars Institute has released a call for proposals related to this year’s theme, "Teaching, Research and Service: United Through Technology." A limited number of both presentation sessions and seats are available to UAB graduate students. March 31 is the deadline for submissions. Learn more or register online. As a last-ditch effort, UAB doctors used a portable heart/lung bypass machine originally developed for heart surgery to save a young mother dying from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Nearly 100 difficult-to-image proteins will soar into orbit on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and travel to the International Space Station. They are part of a study to demonstrate the effects of microgravity on protein crystals led by UAB's Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering. Mona Fouad, M.D., director of the Division of Preventive Medicine and of the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center, has been appointed to a new position — senior associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion — in the UAB School of Medicine, effective April 1.
