Roberson, West take the reins of CNET

James Allen Pittman Jr., M.D., who began his career here as a medical resident in 1956 and came to be considered a principal architect of the School of Medicine, passed away Jan. 12. "He is one of the great people who, through his unwavering dedication, helped propel UAB’s growth into an institution that can and does change the world for the better,” said UAB President Ray Watts, M.D.

Selfie at the South Pole
This week, polar research scientist and biology Professor Charles Amsler, Ph.D., did something no other UAB professor has done: He took a selfie at the South Pole.
Amsler, who is co-director of UAB's research in Antarctica, also has been manager for the Antarctic organisms and ecosystems program at the National Science Foundation since June 2013. He is in Antarctica reviewing research support facilities and science programs under his management at NSF.

UAB among Becker's top hospitals for women
UAB Hospital made the Becker's Hospital Review list of "100 Hospitals With Great Women's Health Programs," because of the comprehensive, high-quality of care provided in areas such as gynecology, obstetrics, reproductive medicine and other women's health needs.

Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts now open
The College of Arts & Sciences will open its new home for art instruction and professional galleries Jan. 16 to provide innovative opportunities for education, share the outstanding work of our faculty and students and attract acclaimed artists to UAB. UAB, Children’s of Alabama working to advance pediatric research
New federal legislation has established the framework for a research network to study rare pediatric diseases, an idea UAB and Children's of Alabama have long championed. UAB Professor of Pediatrics David Kimberlin, M.D., who also is president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, will represent Alabama on the implementation workgroup to coordinate with the NIH. UAB and Children’s will apply to become a primary site in the new network.
