UAB kicks off its annual Summer of Wellness initiative June 1. This year, employees can get free access to the Campus Recreation Center throughout the entire month. Online registration is required to access the facility, as well as access to additional health and wellness opportunities including rewards for checking in throughout the month.

Patients at 29 hospitals and free-standing emergency rooms around the state are now being evaluated rapidly for suspected strokes and other conditions by expert UAB neurologists. The program has provided nearly 7,000 consults for patients — many of whom are routed to potentially lifesaving care or saved from expensive transfers away from their home communities.

We are looking for those with high blood pressure and a BMI over 30 to participate in a study
Participate in the PRECISION-BP research study investigating the best time to take blood pressure medication, morning or evening. This study participants will receive blood pressure medications for 28 days. Eligible participants must be obese (BMI: 30-45 kg/m2) men and women, have high blood pressure, and have no history of heart or kidney problems. The study involves wearing a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, 24-hour inpatient visits at UAB Hospital, taking medications, and collecting blood and urine samples. Meals will be provided at no cost. Participants will be compensated $575 for completing the study visits. You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American, and have no history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems. The study involves performing some exercise, taking sacubitril/valsartan, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated $675 for completing all the visits. Geurs named new School of Dentistry dean
Nicolaas Geurs, D.D.S., M.S., inaugural holder of UAB's Weatherford-Palcanis Endowed Professorship in Dentistry and the Dental Alumni-Joseph F. Volker Chair of Clinical Dentistry, has been selected as the next dean of the UAB School of Dentistry following a national search. He will begin his new role June 1.
