Participants aged 18 to 35 years old are needed for a research project at the UAB School of Optometry. If you have normal vision and do not wear glasses you are still eligible to participate as a control. This study aims to evaluate the effects of optical defocus and wavelengths of light on the axial length and choroidal thickness of the eye. Eligible participants will attend two visits, each of approximately one-and-a-half-hour duration, and wear spectacle or soft contact lenses during the experiments. When the study is complete, participants will receive a $100 ClinCard gift voucher as compensation for their time and participation.

UAB Human Resources is hosting the third annual Meet HR & Friends on the Green on Friday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the Campus Green. The annual come-and-go event is free and open to faculty, staff, students and members of the UAB community, and features outdoor fun, giveaways, games and prizes, music and more.

The Commission on the Status of Women awarded Jesse Rattan, Ph.D., Mitzi Swift, Grace Jepkemboi Komol, Ph.D., Amanda Watts and Jewell Dickson-Clayton for their commitments to providing significant service to and advancing issues that primarily affect underrepresented populations.

Sheryl LeAnn Perkins, DHA, will join Human Resources May 6 from the Arkansas State University System, where she oversaw the system's $10 million self-insured health plan fund.

More than 300 employees with 20 or more years of service will be honored during a reception April 10. Richard O. Davis, M.D., will be honored for 50 years of service to UAB.
In honor of Women's History Month, a remembrance of Alice McNeal, M.D., founding chair of UAB's Department of Anesthesiology (now the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine) in 1948 and first woman anesthesiologist to be named to the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.

Vern Bush, Kevin Davis and Brittany Martin are the first-quarter 2024 honorees of the UAB Values in Action Program. Nominations for second-quarter 2024 honorees are open through April 24.

You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American, and have no history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems. The study involves performing some exercise, taking sacubitril/valsartan, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated $675 for completing all the visits. Eligible participants must be healthy adults (BMI less than 45 kg/m2) and have no history of diabetes, heart problems, or kidney problems. The study involves consuming prepared meals, performing exercise on a treadmill, undergoing a glucose test, and collecting blood, urine samples, and collection of genetic information.
