Physician faculty and residents will begin seeing patients of the Russell General Internal Medicine and Gynecology continuity clinics at Birmingham Health Care Clinic beginning in July, coinciding with the new School of Medicine residency year.

The Russell Continuity Clinic is the training site for more than 140 residents and provides 17,000 patient encounters each year. Russell Clinic patients will continue to see their same physicians in the new location on 20th Street at the corner of 16th Avenue South, and they will receive communication about the move beginning May 11.

“Birmingham Health Care is a federally qualified health center and as a residency clinic practice site it will provide a better experience for residents — expanded clinic space, improved staffing and an electronic health record,” said Gustavo Heudebert, M.D., program director, Internal Medicine, and assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education.

“For our patients, the new location offers easy access to the building via free parking across the street from the clinic, improved facilities, access to a pharmacy on-site with discounted pricing and bilingual staff,” said Deb McGrew, assistant vice president for Transplant and Ambulatory Services.

McGrew said current Russell Clinic staff were notified of the planned transition for the clinic Wednesday. “We are committed to working with staff impacted by this transition to support them in finding new job opportunities,” she said.

Specifically, the staff are being provided with career transition support that includes interviewing skills, resume development and job search strategies.
