Beginning Oct. 18, the Office of the Provost will restructure its administrative organization to better align units and strengthen support for UAB's academic mission, says Provost Eli Capilouto.

The new model positions libraries, academic services and administrative and student life units under the direction of a vice provost for Student and Faculty Success and a vice provost for Administration and Quality Improvement, both of whom will report to Capilouto. Harlan Sands, current associate provost for Administration and Finance, will be appointed vice provost for Administration and Quality Improvement. A national search will be conducted for the new vice provost position.

Other selected units will move to the College of Arts and Sciences to bring them closer to the constituents they serve. Details regarding the new vision and structure are available at www.uab.edu/provost.

"We're taking these steps primarily to reemphasize our focus on ensuring student and faculty success," Capilouto says. "I am grateful to all who participated in the comprehensive review of the service effectiveness of the Office of the Provost that led directly to these changes."

The provost noted that everyone involved in the review gave constructive and actionable feedback. "We think it will quickly become apparent as we go forward that we are implementing their suggestions for improvements to ensure that we are more effective and efficient in how we serve our students and faculty," he says.

"The UAB community is obviously very creative and energized, as well as committed to achieving excellence in each area of UAB's strategic plan under President Garrison's leadership," Capilouto says. "Our office looks forward to supporting teaching, research and scholarship across all disciplines."

The review included interviews with key stakeholders, senior university administrators, students, faculty and staff.
