Refugee advocate to speak at UAB Jan. 25

Luma Mufleh is featured in the best-selling book Outcasts United, which is the 2010-11 UAB Discussion Book. She will share her story at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25

For many refugees escaping to the American South from war-torn countries, Luma Mufleh is a savior. She is the founder of Fugees Family Inc., a Georgia-based non-profit organization devoted to helping survivors of war. Mufleh is featured in the best-selling book Outcasts United, which is the 2010-11 UAB Discussion Book. She will share her story at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25 in the Hill University Center Alumni Auditorium.

Mufleh touches the lives of refugees from more than 24 war-torn countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Congo, Somalia and Sudan. She coaches the Fugees Soccer Team for boys, created an after-school tutoring program, a middle school and a cleaning service that employs immigrants and refugees.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
