UAB biologist and researcher Doug Watson is unraveling the process by which blue crabs molt, and says his team is close to discovering the structure of the molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) receptor, which could lead them to develop methods to induce molting on command to produce soft-shell crab as needed.

Up to bat

Contestant Javier King steps up to the plate at the Wii Sports Tournament hosted by Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) on July 16 to raise money for patient services at Spain Rehabilitation Center. The event benefited the Stover Assistive Technology Laboratory, which helps patients with spinal-cord injuries learn to use technology to improve activities of daily living. Patients in the Stover Lab often use the Wii as part of their physical therapy. PMR uses a team approach to provide care for its patients, and each discipline takes an active role in the patient’s care plan. Visit main.uab.edu/Sites/physicalmedicine/Services to learn more.
Eight UAB Hospital specialty programs are among the nation’s top 50 — and six are in the top 25 — of the 16 categories evaluated at 4,861 U.S. hospitals this year by U.S. News & World Report.
