The School of Health Professions is not only home to some of the best ranked programs in the nation, but you will also find students from all around the world studying, living, and learning together.
We want to make sure international students have every opportunity to succeed in both course work and college life, so we’ve gathered some easy tips to help you have the best experience studying abroad at UAB:
- Visit UAB’s International Student and Scholar Services located in the INTO UAB Center on the second floor on Mervyn Sterne Library. They can help you with forms and applications, provide city guides and recommendations, and answer your questions to help make your life easier.
- Don’t be shy. Let your instructors know that English is your second language and ask for permission to record their lectures for reference after class.
- Take advantage of class study groups and the SHP Learning Resource Center. You will go over material at your own pace and also have access to resources, reference books, and physical assessment equipment to checkout.
- Find extra help at the INTO UAB Learning Resource Center (LRC) and UAB’s English Language Programs. Tutoring is an expected, normal part of studying at an American university. The INTO UAB LRC provides international students one-on-one and group tutoring for their degree programs and English classes, as well as workshops to learn about American culture. Make appointments with tutors in the INTO UAB LRC using your BlazerID.
- Finally, attend fun international events at INTO UAB and sign up for an International Mentor that will answer your questions and help make your experience at UAB the very best!
We invite you to explore all of UAB’s programs for students in addition to all of the programs and services offered for international students. And remember — you are not alone! There are other international students/non-native English speakers in just about every class you take! Don’t be afraid to reach out, share your stories, and help each other!
