W. Timothy Garvey, M.D., the Charles Butterworth Jr. Endowed Professor in Nutrition Sciences, inspired colleagues, students, administrators, and many others for more than 15 years as the chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences in the UAB School of Health Professions. When he came to UAB in 2003, he brought an interest in translational diabetes research and generated a broader interest in metabolic research, to include diabetes and cardiometabolic disease.
Increase in Research
In 2008, Dr. Garvey established the UAB Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC), which became the Diabetes Research Center (DRC) in 2013. The center was designed to facilitate research in diabetes as well as cardiometabolic disease, including cardiovascular disease risk, and helped establish a vibrant diabetes research community at UAB. The DRC is one of only six NIDDK-funded diabetes centers located in the U.S. and the only one located in the Deep South. Since joining UAB, Dr. Garvey has been associated with a near three-fold increase in department research funding.
Definition of Obesity
Not only has he been a visionary leader for the department, but Dr. Garvey has achieved international recognition for his research in the metabolic, molecular, and genetic pathogenesis of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. In 2012, he was a leading contributor to and author of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Position Statement designating obesity as a disease, lead author on the evidence-based AACE clinical practice guidelines for obesity management, and co-author of the new medical diagnostic term for obesity – adiposity-based chronic disease.
