According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “biotechnology is a set of techniques used to adapt plants, microbes and animals for specific purposes.” In order for our students to learn about these techniques as well as the theories behind why the techniques work they need access to reliable, up-to-date background biotechnology resources.
Resources for Nutrition Sciences
Books
If you search the Lister Hill Library catalog using common language (i.e. keywords that describe your topic), you will find plenty of books on nutritional topics. But if you want to be more focused, sometimes the best way to find the most relevant books is to search using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). For instance, several subject terms for nutrition include nutrition, nutrition therapy, nutrition physiology, nutrition disorders, malnutrition, nutrigenomics, and nutrition assessment.
Visual tools and resources are so important to students in the health professions. Seeing images and video of anatomical structures and medical procedures helps students to put their learning into context. Lister Hill Library has many databases that provide these types of learning materials. To see a complete listing of these databases, navigate to the “Images” and “Multimedia” categories on the databases page - http://www.uab.edu/lister/databases.
As your students write their papers and learn to cite their references in a particular style, know that the librarians at Lister Hill Library can answer their citation questions. We get citation questions on a regular basis, particularly about APA and AMA styles. On our website, we have resources for your students about a variety of citation styles, including AMA, APA, ASA, NLM, Chicago, and Vancouver.
Reference Management tools are organizational tools and time savers, helpful to faculty and students as they gather resources, store and organize the references and full text, and write papers and articles while incorporating their references. EndNote is available as a free download to all UAB faculty, staff, and students through UAB IT.
IBISWorld is a new database available through UAB Libraries. Currently it can be accessed through Sterne Library’s databases’ page www.mhsl.uab.edu/databases or directly through this link. It contains detailed U.S. industry research reports including supply chain information on the market, historical and forecasted revenue data, operating strengths and weaknesses, analysis of external drivers, the competitive landscape and major players, and industry profit and costs benchmarks.
You will find some print test prep materials at the UAB Libraries.
