Barbara Gower, Ph.D., an internationally renowned scientist and director of the UAB Metabolism Core Laboratory, has been named chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences following a nationwide search.
Since 1997, Gower has been an integral member of the department, and she brings a deep understanding of the department’s proud history as well as a clear vision of growth opportunities moving forward.
“We had an outstanding candidate pool with a lot of interest from impressive leaders across the country, but nobody stood out as much as Barbara. She is committed to working collaboratively across UAB and our surrounding communities and in developing strong relationships with faculty, staff, students and alumni to help this department thrive,” said UAB School of Health Professions Dean Andrew J. Butler, Ph.D.
Gower’s successful leadership record includes serving as director of the Metabolism Core Laboratory in the NORC and CCTS since 1999, and director of the Human Physiology Core in the DRC since 2008.
While serving as chair, she will continue to conduct life-changing research looking at nutrition interventions for obesity and metabolic health, and risk for type 2 diabetes in African Americans. In addition, Gower – who has served on more than 50 graduate committees, including 30 as committee chair – will carry on as a valued educator and mentor to the next generation of nutrition scientists.
Gower’s first day as chair was January 1, 2024.
