The City of Birmingham launched a micromobility program in spring 2021. Under the program, motorized scooters and pedal-assisted bicycles are available to rent using downloadable apps. A full list of city rules can be found on the city’s website.
On UAB’s campus, micromobility users must follow guidelines to ensure we can keep this valuable resource as an option:
- Scooters and bicycles may only be operated in areas where bicycle traffic is allowed.
- Users should avoid sidewalks.
- Scooters and bicycles should be operated at a low speed in the presence of pedestrians.
- Pedestrians always have the right of way.
- Scooters and bicycles must be operated in a safe manner and may be subject to citations if operated in manner determined to be reckless.
- Scooters and bicycles should be parked in designated parking spaces/areas only. DO NOT make the following mistakes:
- Parking in a manner that obstructs ADA access or parking
- Parking in doorways
- Blocking ramps and stairways
Report Misuse
UAB Transportation has created a tool which enables individuals to report unwanted behaviors including unsafe use of the micromobility devices and those that are parked out of place. All reports will be sent to UAB Transportation and the City of Birmingham’s Department of Transportation for action.
