The gleaming $32-million, 72,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of the School of Nursing (above) offers “the opportunity to do things that have never been done before,” says Doreen Harper, Ph.D., R.N., dean and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair. “It is changing how we live, work, and learn in our school.” Here are a few of the new spaces students will discover behind the bright facade:
Innovation Collaboratory: A high-tech classroom designed to encourage discussions and interaction among students and faculty.
Double the simulation lab space: Lifelike settings for gaining hands-on experience in basic, hospital/long-term, mother-baby, pediatric, intensive/emergency, surgical, and home care. Spaces include the Joy P. Harbert Nursing Skills Lab, the Sue Ellen and Mike Lucas Pediatric Nursing Competency Lab Suite, and the Alacare Home Health and Hospice Nursing Skills Suite. Rooms can simulate 24-hour hospital care, complete with a nursing station and patient transfer elevator.
Rick M. and Barrett Brock MacKay Nightingale Scholars Gallery: A hub for global nursing activity, including educational seminars, lectures, community gatherings, and more.
Leadership Institute: Flexible space for specialized education, with movable walls and interactive video technology.
Student Commons: A welcoming spot to study, collaborate, and relax, the space includes the Bill Ferguson Family Student Lounge and Bill Ferguson Family Student Leadership Room.
