UAB Recognized Among Great Colleges to Work For
As part of the 2023 Campus Engagement survey, UAB participated in the Great Colleges to Work For program, which offers the opportunity to be recognized among the 12 survey dimensions and provides access to benchmark data to compare our institution’s survey results with other institutions across the country. This year was UAB’s first time to be recognized and was selected for recognition in four areas.

Institution-Wide Areas of Improvement
Even great institutions have opportunities for improvement, and ours include...
- Performance Management
- Communication and Collaboration
- Respect and Appreciation
Information from this survey, including comparisons between the data collected in 2019 and this year’s results, were reviewed alongside the Faculty IDEA Survey to identify four recurring themes for improvement and planned actions to take over the next year to address them:
-
Faculty and staff want to understand the vision for UAB.
Action:
- Since January 2022, a Strategic Planning Council has worked to draft our 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, including updating the vision. This fall, we will communicate broadly about the draft plan and gather feedback, starting with a town hall meeting on October 25, 2023. See more details here.
-
Faculty and staff express the desire for more communication, respect and appreciation.
Actions:
- Human Resources Learning & Development is leading an effort to gather and promote best practices for effective, thoughtful communication practices and techniques to build a culture of appreciation and accountability.
- Free LinkedIn Learning modules related to these topics will also be promoted throughout the year.
- University Relations will provide professional communicators in schools/colleges/units templates and guidance to amplify important news and messages at the local level.
- Human Resources will be working to provide guidance and best practices for recognizing employees’ work.
- A campaign will be launched to promote the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan’s refreshed values and highlight how employees live/demonstrate those values in their daily roles; vice presidents and deans will be provided communication resources and encouraged to share what the institution’s strategic plan means for their school/college/unit, as well as present and regularly reinforce their local strategic plan and how it relates to each employee’s role.
- The Office of Compliance is leading a refresh of the Code of Conduct.
-
Faculty and staff are interested in performance management.
Actions:
- The Center for Teaching and Learning and Human Resource Learning and Development will partner to offer workshops to help managers (including chairs) and employees understand expectations and get the most out of the self and manager assessments of employee performance.
- Human Resources will continue to enhance and support the performance management tools and processes. This year, the Perform app (performance evaluations for staff) was updated based on feedback from staff and managers to include a separate section for goals, which can be updated and modified throughout the year.
-
Faculty and staff want more shared governance.
Action:
- UAB leadership is working with the Faculty Senate to increase communication about the important work they do in representing the faculty. Please follow official communications, talk to your Faculty Senate liaison, and get involved in the Faculty Senate or Staff Council.
