Painting students at UAB will gain a comprehensive understanding of painting techniques and materials, and learn to position themselves within the larger context of contemporary art.
At the beginning level, students will primarily work from direct observation to develop a strong foundation of color, composition, and form. Proper use and care for painting materials will be emphasized along with studio safety. At the conclusion of beginning painting, students will have the skills necessary for more experimental and self-driven painting techniques.
At the intermediate level, students will explore a range of specialized areas within the field of painting. These may include figurative painting, abstraction, observational painting, narrative and symbolism, and conceptualism to name a few. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of their materials by learning to make paints, grounds, supports, and mediums.
Advanced painting students will learn to use all of these skills in pursuit of a personal vision. A strong emphasis will be placed on the development of a “body of work”, meaning a cohesive group of paintings that are conceptually unified. Evaluation of this work will happen through regular critique either one on one or with colleagues.
A successful painting student at UAB will have the work ethic, practical skills, and theoretical foundation necessary to be a professional artist or to pursue further graduate study.
