Getting into the Program

We look for students with promising academic abilities and potential for success. Applicants to the M.A. program must meet minimum requirements established by the Department of History.

The TOEFL and TWE are required for international applicants whose native language is not English. The English proficiency exam might not be required if the applicant meets the appropriate criteria. How Long Does it Take to Complete the Program?

The M.A. degree in history requires 36 credit hours. Students taking a full course load of three 3-credit-hour courses per semester can complete the program in four semesters. Many of our students, however, juggle career and/or family responsibilities and tailor their course loads to fit their situations. The department makes every effort to help students find a course of study that is compatible with their needs so they can complete their degrees in a timely manner.

How Do I Apply?

Application for admission should be made online through the UAB Graduate School website. Admissions will be made for fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Application Checklist

  • Complete and submit online application.
  • Submit application fee payment.
    • Domestic: $50.00
    • International: $60.00
  • Two letters of reference: Applicants will identify recommenders as part of the online application process. Notification emails will be sent to the identified recommenders who will then submit their recommendation electronically. Upon submission, recommendations will be attached to the application.
  • Request one (1) official transcript to be issued directly to the Graduate School by the school’s Registrar’s Office. Depending on which transcript service the prior institution uses, applicants should use This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. as the email address or select the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Graduate Admissions as the receiving university. Transcripts forwarded from a student’s email account will not be considered official.
    • NOTE: Official transcripts do not need to be sent for coursework completed at UAB. Your UAB transcript will be automatically added to your application when processed.
  • Submit official TOEFL test score (for international applicants only).
