Kallol Chakrabarty received his Ph.D. in 2023 from the Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His doctoral research focused on synthesizing novel superhard thin films composed of first and second-row elemental solids (C, N, O, and B) from the periodic table, utilizing Microwave Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (MPCVD). His work also involved extensive characterization of these materials using techniques, including X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Nanoindentation to examine the films structural and mechanical properties.

Kallol is currently working on synthesizing and characterizing high-entropy alloys (HEAs), a class of materials known for their exceptional strength, thermal stability, and resistance to wear and corrosion. His research primarily focuses on fabricating these alloys through vacuum arc melting, which involves melting metals in a vacuum to ensure purity and control over alloy composition. In addition to synthesis, he employs a range of characterization techniques to analyze the structural, mechanical, and chemical properties of the HEAs. These techniques include X-ray Diffraction (XRD) for phase identification, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to examine surface morphology, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental composition analysis, and Nanoindentation to evaluate mechanical properties such as hardness and modulus. He also uses the Physics Properties Measurement System (PPMS) to measure various physical properties of a material, including its electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, and thermal conductivity, over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields. Through this work, he aims to uncover relationships between alloy composition, processing conditions, and resulting properties, contributing valuable insights into developing HEAs for advanced applications.
