Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation

UAB’s Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation (CIPES) is housed in the Office of the Provost. CIPES brings together students, faculty, and staff from each of its stakeholder schools into a cohesive and integrated system of interprofessional education and training.

CIPES facilitates interprofessional education and training on the UAB campus through three distinct offices: the Office of Interprofessional Curriculum (OIPC), the Office of Interprofessional Simulation (OIPS), and the Office of Standardized Patient Education (OSPE).

The Office of Interprofessional Curriculum (OIPC) supports development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative interprofessional education (IPE) activities across UAB and beyond. The OIPC team provides personalized curriculum development, IPE faculty development workshops, and strategies for integrating interprofessional learning experiences within courses and across programs.

The Office of Interprofessional Simulation (OIPS) partners with faculty and staff across campus to design, develop, and implement simulation experiences for stakeholder schools while adhering to standards of best practice. The OIPS team aims to deliver simulation experiences that result in students graduating ready to practice in safe and effective ways with other professions. OIPS achieved re-accreditation by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in 2021.

The Office of Standardized Patient Education (OSPE) provides the space, resources, and expertise to enhance student skills in clinical interviewing, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and patient/client communication through realistic interactions with standardized/simulated patients and clients (SPs). OSPE utilizes current best practices and innovations in SP methodology to support current partnerships and collaborations with schools and faculty across UAB’s campus. OSPE was re-accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in 2021.
