Geriatric Scholar Program


Started in 2010 this program is now administered through the Center for Nursing Excellence and is based on the Nursing Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE). Since its inception this program has provided an innovative interprofessional development experience for over 80 health professionals.

The program has two tracks; one for licensed health professionals and one for non-licensed professionals.

For the Licensed Geriatric Scholar Program:
Year 1 of the program focuses on educating scholars on how to provide evidence-based care to geriatric patients which consist of:
Two 8-hour workshops
1-hour lunch and learns
12 hours of clinical rotations where scholars can choose from various options including Geriatric Consults, Ace unit, Palliative Care, Geriatric Psychiatry, nursing home, etc.
4 hours of geriatric education provided through simulation.
In year 2 of the program, scholars are mentored through the completion of a quality improvement project that improves the care provided to geriatric patients. The projects completed by scholars improved quality outcomes and the care received by our geriatric patients.

For the Geriatric Scholar Patient Support Program:
A one-year program on how to provide evidence-based care to geriatric patients, consisting of:
Two 8 hour workshops
3-hour mini workshops that are held once a month for 7 months
Geriatric content presented through lectures, case discussion, simulation, and hands-on learning
4 hours of geriatric education through simulation
Mentored through the completion of an educational project on unit
