Interprofessional Team Training
Started in 2009 as part of the Geriatric Education Center this program is now administered by OIPC. Since its inception this program has provided an Interprofessional team building experience for over 4,000 students from three institutions (UAB, Samford, and Auburn). In the Fall and Winter semester 400 + students gather for a two and a half hour activity. Students representing several professions (Clinical Laboratory Science, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant and Social Work). Students are divided into small groups for faculty-facilitated development of a collaborative care plan, based on a patient video interview. Complexity is then added as the facilitator introduces additional health, social and financial issues that the team needs to consider. For Spring 2020 a second case study, Maternal and Child Health, was introduced, joining the original Geriatric case study.
In 2020, as part of UAB COVID remote learning protocols, OIPC piloted an online version of IPTT. The full program was offered online in Fall of 2020 and will continue in this format. In Spring 2022 two new cases were piloted as we expand our cases to cover young adult and middle-aged adult issues.
Interprofessional Training Days
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives for the program are for the participating students to:1. Describe the importance of interprofessional teams in the care of older adults.
2. Recognize and discuss the differing perspectives, values, and experiences of professionals in other disciplines.
3. Communicate as a team member to develop a simple care plan for an older adult that addresses problems from medical, emotional, social, environmental, and economic perspectives.
4. Reflect on one’s own attitudes towards interprofessional teams.
Program
Sessions begin with an Icebreaker activity. This is followed by viewing the case video before small group care planning and discussion of the issues. This activity highlights the complimentary and differing roles and responsibilities between the participating professions. Finally, the group debriefs and completes the course evaluation. The program takes up to 90 minutes to complete.Professions that have been represented in IPTT
