Central Alabama High-Field NMR Facility

UAB Central Alabama High Field NMR is one of the best equipped and state-of-the-art NMR facilities in the Southeast.

Ascend Bruker 850 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance The NMR Facility consists of seven NMR spectrometers located in six research laboratories in UAB’s Department of Chemistry building. The facility is designed to allow researchers direct 24/7 access to all spectrometers. It also provides NMR expertise for researchers needing NMR data through submitted samples, either on a service basis or as part of a collaborative research project.

The NMR Facility is an essential university-wide resource dedicated to supporting structural biology and drug discovery, and to making this powerful analytical technique available to researchers throughout UAB and elsewhere in the scientific community. It provides unique training opportunities for faculty, staff, and students on the application of NMR spectroscopy for their research.

Research Areas

The primary research areas of the NMR Facility include structural elucidation of biological macromolecules and complexes of biological macromolecules, proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, oligonucleotides, oligosaccharides, and lipids as well as focused research in drug-discovery and biomaterials design and development, and NMR-metabolomics.

As a highly specialized facility on the UAB campus, it provides services to users and facilitates and promotes research activities. The operating costs of the facility are typically recouped through a combination of institutional support, user fees, and grant and contract support.

The Central Alabama High-Field NMR Facility is a consolidation of the Molecular NMR Shared Facility (operating as a Comprehensive Cancer Center Core Facility) and the UAB Department of Chemistry NMR Laboratory (serving as an NMR instrumentation laboratory for department).
