Department direct hires (Fast Track) for 02 Full-Time Temporary and 04 Irregular staff positions are allowed for temporary assignments when the nature of the role is especially unique and hard to fill. The department must identify a qualified candidate prior to submitting a PAR/CRF. Click here to view the Process Flow Chart.
Note: If the job duties are not deemed especially unique or if the job is not historically hard to fill, the department should go through the Temporary Services process.

Q: Do identified candidates need to meet job qualifications?Yes. The department needs to ensure identified candidates meet the minimum job qualifications before a referral is submitted. Please refer to JobArchitect.
Q: Will qualifications be verified?A background screening process is conducted for Fast Track hires which checks criminal background and verifies current employer and highest completed education.
Q: Can direct hires start work before their background check is complete?Yes, Fast track hires are contingent upon a clear background check, but the department understands if any discrepancies are found the candidate can be terminated. HR will notify the department with possible termination recommendations.
Q: Will the department be charged for the background checks? No. However, this is subject to change.
Q: How long can someone work as a temporary direct hire?02 Temporary employees typically work 40 hours per week. They have an expected termination date of less than one year from their hire date.
04 These employees work either full-time or part-time. They work no set schedule and may be expected to report to work on an irregular basis. Irregular employees are also those who work less than 20 hours per week and/or work an irregular schedule not meeting the requirements established for part-time regular employees. Irregular employees are not eligible for any UAB benefits or privileges of employment.
When it comes to providing qualified temporary staff, UAB Temporary Services can do much more than fill your immediate need, we can save you time and money. Prior to placement selected candidates undergo a comprehensive initial screening, which includes an extensive criminal history investigation, verification of education and previous work history, and a review of motor vehicle records, where necessary.
The use of outside temporary employment agencies is discouraged. Private agencies should be used only after it is determined that no qualified individual is available through UAB Temporary Services. Temporary Services charges a much lower rate than that of outside temporary employment agencies. Departments that are assigned temporary employees are charged the employee’s base salary plus a small percentage to cover administrative costs. The department’s account is automatically billed. No requisitions for payment are required.
