UAB IT employees are testing labels in Microsoft 365 apps to help identify classification of data.
As a result of this pilot, you may see labels on documents shared with you by UAB IT employees. Labels appear as a colored shield at the top of the document when it is opened. These labels correspond to our Data Classification categories: green for public, yellow for sensitive, red for restricted.
Sensitivity labels are intended to help us better understand the security classification of files and folders in the cloud, so that we can better secure our data. It is part of recent efforts to improve security, including:
- Changing the default sharing option for files in Microsoft 365
- Introducing data classification labels in Box
If the pilot is successful, UAB IT will introduce sensitivity labels in Microsoft 365 to the rest of campus. UAB IT will keep you updated when the project expands to campus.
