The UAB Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is home to a vibrant, highly integrated and collaborative community of medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, staff, and faculty, all committed to providing the best care to adult and pediatric patients through innovative clinical service, education and research.
By employing an anesthesia care team model that is buttressed by dedicated nurse anesthetists, technical assistants, and laboratory technicians, our anesthesiologists supervise more than 130,000 patient encounters annually, deliver full-time critical care in three state-of-the-art surgical intensive care units, and direct comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pain treatment programs throughout the facilities within the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System. The large number of cases, integrated with basic and clinical research programs in pain, critical care medicine, and perioperative anesthesiology, results in wide-ranging expertise in patient care.
Our didactic and practical educational programs are designed to educate caring and compassionate clinicians and scientists, dedicated to service and the advancement of healthcare to the citizens of the state of Alabama and throughout our nation. We are extremely proud of the anesthesiologists that have trained in the department since its founding by Dr. Alice McNeal in 1948.
