Our clinical base year has been developed and refined to provide a well balanced experience in clinical medicine where interns will gain broad medical knowledge and rapidly expand clinical skills and judgment. We have partnered with well respected residency programs known for high quality teaching as we selected the clinical experience. The anesthesiology interns are highly valued members of the health care team on each of these rotations.
Clinical Base Year rotations include:

- Subspecialty rotations such as renal, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, and cardiology care unit
- General medicine rotations at University Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital
- All residents have experience in care of patients with renal and cardiac disease
- Emergency Medicine
- Critical Care Medicine
- Pain Medicine
- Perioperative Medicine including perioperative optimization and pain management
- Anesthesiology
During this year, residents will have instruction and experience with quality improvement and patient safety as well as echocardiography/ultrasound led by faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Residents will also have multiple opportunities for simulation training during the clinical base year, including procedural simulation with vascular access and immersive simulations focuing on critical event management.
On completion of the clinical base year, residents will be well prepared for transition to clinical anesthesiology and will have developed many friendships both within and outside the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
