The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics is jointly appointed in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at UAB. As such, there are no formal undergraduate teaching requirements for our faculty. However, our faculty are devoted to education of the next generation of scientists, at all levels, so we host independent researchers from various UAB undergraduate degree programs in our labs.
By working in the labs in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, UAB undergraduates gain exposure to cutting edge technology and experimental strategies, while immersing themselves in an aggressive research community. Undergraduate students participate directly in our research labs in a variety of roles, even resulting in original research publications.
The experience of working in aggressive, world class laboratories is invaluable in preparing students for their next steps in education, whether that be graduate school, medical school, or joining the work force. In the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department, we are pleased to host an array of students from diverse undergraduate degree programs: Chemistry, Biology, and Honors College.
