Conducting collaborative science to better understand and treat arthritis, musculoskeletal, bone, and autoimmune diseases.

Chatham

The Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center has worked to establish collaborative synergies across schools, departments and divisions.  Building on its traditional strengths in immunology and autoimmunity, the Center faculty has developed programs in translational human genetics (focusing on the immunogenetic basis of autoimmune disease) and in outcomes and population-based research, in addition to research themes encompassing experimental therapeutics, bone cartilage and connective tissue, immunology, autoimmunity, autoimmunity and inflammation and neuroimmunology.

These programs leverage the emergence of team science -- the bringing together of individuals with different yet highly complementary skills -- and the opportunities in personalized medicine by bringing a deep understanding of genetic polymorphisms together with rich, longitudinal clinical phenotypic data. Through collaborative synergies and partnerships, the Center has strengthened the research capacity in discovery and translational research across disciplines and has facilitated more effective clinical care.

Goals of the Center

  1. Cultivate a rich intellectula millieu and research environment to generate new scientific knowledge that will improve outcomes and lives of patients with arthritis, musculoskeletal, bone, and autoimmune conditions in the community through support for new research and utilization of shared services.

  2. Support and retain outstanding junior/early-career investigators, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

  3. Provide education, training and resources for both new and established investigators through training programs, mentorship opportunities and resources to early career investigators.
