In our comprehensive one-year Advanced Interventional & Structural Cardiology Fellowship program, we aim to train leaders in the field of structural heart and advanced coronary intervention in a mentored environment.
Fellowship Experience
Thank you for your interest in our one-year non-ACGME accredited Advanced Interventional and Structural Fellowship program. Our program provides superior advanced cardiovascular image training in a collaborative environment. We have specialty clinics across our medical campus, which is anchored by our 1,200 bed inpatient center UAB Hospital—the eighth largest public hospital in the nation. The hospital is in close proximity to the Birmingham VA Medical Center, UAB Hospital Highlands campus, The Kirklin Clinic, and Children's Hospital of Alabama where fellows also train.
Clinical Training
Our fellows achieve Proctor-level proficiency in basic structural procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, transseptal/hemodynamic studies, left atrial appendage occulusion, MitraClip, and atrial septal defect/patent foramen ovale through extensive exposure to high-volume cases covering all pre/intra/post-procedural aspects, with a special focus on appropriateness, analysis, device selection, outcomes, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Upon graduating, trainees will be proficient in advanced and intricate cases, such as valve-in-valve, tricuspid intervention, paravalvular leak, fistula, alternate access, complex veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and and veno-arterial extracoporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation strategies, LAVA, Protek, limb perfusion strategy, transapical, pulmonary embolism evaluation, stratification, intervention, and management. The structural service is integral to the multidisciplinary pulmonary embolism team.
Additionally, they will become competent advanced transesophageal echocardiography operators, trained in acquisition, detailed analysis, interpretation, and structural procedure planning, take STEMI calls, teach interventional fellows, and get exposed to complex atherectomy cases with more critical focus on indications and outcome optimization.
Research Opportunities
Our trainees play a key role in the advancement of many interventional/structural trails by identifying and assessing patients for their eligibility and coordinating with our research office.
Teaching Conferences
Our fellows attend weekly conferences for Interventional & Structural Cardiology and Structural Heart and Valve training.
Let's get acquainted
It's not just what you learn. It's also about the people you learn with. Our cardiology fellowship program leaders are dedicated to developing the potential of every talented trainee.
