Emerge Cohort

In 2023, the Developmental Core initiated a peer-mentoring series for ESI/NHI (MDs and PhDs) in HIV research across UAB, involving Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. An annual cohort of ~12 is competitively selected, engaging in monthly in-person sessions led by trainees and facilitated by Dr. Lynn Matthews. The goals include networking, skill development in "Research in Progress" talks, and covering topics relevant to achieving independent NIH funding.

Participants in Emerge give a research-in-progress update at least once in the year-long series. Emerge is envisioned as an annual cohort program with competitive early-year selection, featuring a 9-month curriculum with breaks in the summer. Continuous feedback will shape the content and platform for optimal support of ESI in HIV research.

Meetings for the 2025 cohort will be held every 3rd Thursday starting March 21, 2025.
