Dr. Cherrington is committed to efforts that bridge the gap between the health care system and underserved communities. Her research focuses are on developing, implementing and evaluating community-based interventions to improve the outcomes of disadvantaged populations at high risk for developing chronic disease, specifically diabetes.
Stefan Kertesz, M.D., MSc

Dr. Kertesz is certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine, has a 22-year history of delivering primary care for vulnerable populations such as the homeless, and an 18-year history of research funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Veterans Administration on care and services for problems of addiction and drug use. An addiction scholar, Kertesz serves on multiple task forces and teams related to opioid safety. He also led a national petition that resulted in major changes to a planned policy set up by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Caroline Presley, M.D., MPH

Dr. Presley is an Assistant Professor in the Divisions of Preventive Medicine and General Internal Medicine at UAB. As a clinician-investigator, her research focuses on improving care and outcomes for adults with cardiometabolic disease. Dr. Presley is particularly focused on addressing emotional distress and supporting self-management among under-resourced populations with type 2 diabetes. She has experience with qualitative research, behavioral intervention development and trials, and large observational studies. Dr. Presley completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt and the VA Quality Scholars Fellowship Program through the Nashville VA.
Research Areas of Interest: Cardiometabolic disease, Behavioral intervention development and trials, and Implementation science.
Rebekah Weil, M.D.

Dr. Weil is a clinician-educator in the Division of General Internal Medicine who works in outpatient clinics and inpatient services at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services, the Birmingham VA Medical Center, and University Hospital. She has an interest in health disparities and caring for underserved patients and acts as director of the Internal Medicine Residency Health Disparities Track and Director of Patient Safety at Cooper Green. She completed residency and chief medical residency at the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Program at UAB before completing a two-year Medical Education General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University.
Scholarly interests include curriculum development and evaluation.
