The Department of Dermatology here at UAB commits itself every day to providing the most compassionate, innovative, and patient-centered dermatological care to people throughout the Birmingham community, state of Alabama, and beyond. Our foundational mission is to meet the needs of our neighbors by offering the most advanced clinical care, research, and education.
As chair, I am honored to work alongside a team where each person comes to work every day with a passion for service. Because of the dedication of our faculty, staff, and trainees, not only are we #2 in the nation for NIH funding among dermatology departments, but we are also a national hub for the management of complicated skin disorders, providing holistic care to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases ranging from hair to nails and all the skin in between! We offer specialized clinics focusing on pediatric dermatology, mole mapping, patch testing, immunodeficiencies, PCOS, vascular anomalies, cosmetics, CTCL, and the relationship between dermatology and rheumatology.
Our internationally renowned physician-scientists are actively involved in cutting-edge basic and clinical science research. Our major research projects currently center on immunodermatology with ongoing studies focused on vaccine development, allergic contact hypersensitivity, photoimmunology, and chemoprevention.
Education is a key area of service for our faculty members, and we take great pride in training medical and graduate students as well as postdoctoral trainees, residents, and fellows. We offer three ACGME accredited training programs that include a dermatology residency, dermatopathology fellowship, and micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship. We also offer a clinical research fellowship as part of our commitment to research.
A founding partner of the School of Medicine since its inception in 1945, we have been one of the top academic departments of dermatology in the United States for over 70 years. We look forward to serving our neighbors and leading the way in dermatologic care for another 70 years.
