The UAB Dermatology Residency is a fully accredited, three-year training program. We participate in the National Resident Matching program. Residents are accepted each year exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service. We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate evidence of motivation and maturity as well as academic excellence. After review of all submitted applications, selected applicants will be invited to interview in early December.
We do not require Step 2, but we strongly encourage it. There is no minimum score for Step 2 to be considered for review.
Specialized Tracks
Rural Residency Track
This rural residency track, sponsored by Alabama Dermatology Society, trains the residents in the latest rural dermatological care so that the resident graduates having the knowledge and skillset to serve rural and/or underserved populations in Alabama. To reach this goal, residents will spend one to three months of each postgraduate year with a board-certified dermatologist outside of Birmingham, learning skin conditions prevalent in rural and/or underserved populations as well as treatment plans specific for these conditions and their differential diagnoses. As part of the track, there is a housing stipend to support the resident when they train in a rural/underserved population area.
This track is available every three years with the next rural resident matching in 2026.
Before training commences in July 2024, the resident will sign an agreement with Alabama Dermatology Society promising to work in either a rural or dermatologically underserved area of Alabama for three years following graduation.
2023-2024 Application Season
For the 2024 ERAS® cycle, our program will be collecting and reviewing data from applicants’ supplemental ERAS applications. Completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional.
In its third year of use, the supplemental ERAS application is designed to help applicants share more information about themselves and assist our program in finding applicants that fit our program’s setting and mission. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.
The supplemental ERAS application provides:
- Geographic preferences (by division and by urban or rural setting)
- Information about an applicant’s most meaningful experiences and other impactful life events, if applicable
- Program signals
