Rodriguez Martin Rodriguez, M.D., has been selected to serve as the Director of the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Rodriguez has displayed exemplary dedication to UAB since 2005 as an outstanding educator and physician. He has played key roles in leadership including Co-director of the UAB Undiagnosed Diseases Program, Director of the Tinsley Harrison General Medicine Service, and most recently, the Interim Division Director for the Division of Infectious Diseases. In this role, he has upheld ID's culture and maintained its programs in patient care, education, and research. The Department of Medicine is thrilled to celebrate Dr. Rodriguez as he assumes his permanent role as Division Director. Congratulations!

Van Gerwen Enhances Vaginal Health in Gender-Affirming Therapy

Olivia Van Gerwen, M.D., MPH, (Asst. Professor, ID) earned a K23 to improve the assessment and management of vaginal health concerns related to gender-affirming testosterone therapy. The study will provide foundational data about vaginal infections experienced in transgender populations.

Madison Joins Division of PACCM

Assistant Professor Matthew Madison, Ph.D., has joined the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. His research focuses on using animal models to study how inhaled nicotine products affect lung disease, innate immunity, lipid balance, and extracellular vesicles in airways. Welcome, Dr. Madison!

Remembering Dr. Claude Bennett

J. Claude Bennett, M.D., passed away on August 11, at the age of 90. He served as the Director of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Chair of the Department of Medicine, and UAB's President from 1982-1996. Widely respected for his ability to bridge basic science with clinical practice, he was deeply admired by students and residents. Gifts may be made in his memory to the J.Claude Bennett Endowed Chair in Rheumatology and Immunology.

DOM Celebrates Kennedy's 43 Years of Service

The Department of Medicine is pleased to honor John I. Kennedy, Jr. M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, on his retirement. Dr. Kennedy served at UAB for 43 years in various roles including Chief of Medical Service at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, Associate Chief of Staff at UAB's Acute and Subspecialty Care, Vice Chair of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, and Senior Advisor and Director for Wellness for the Department of Medicine. We celebrate his legacy and wish him all the best in his retirement.
