I recently sat down with our Vice Chairs to reflect on things that are going well and areas where we have room for improvement in the Department of Medicine. We have accomplished so much to be proud of in 2019. Here are a few highlights that stand out:
We care for our patients kindly and well. Every day, we care for thousands of people, improving their health and reducing their suffering from the disease. We think outside the box for our patients. The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) has officially notified our UAB Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Program of their accreditation. Donna Salzman, MD (Professor, Hematology and Oncology) is Interim Director of the BMT/CT program which involves 300 people across many different disciplines: medicine, nursing, pathology, apheresis, data, and research. We are delighted to celebrate their exemplary performance in quality, patient care and research!

We are delighted to recognize their exceptional accomplishments, and we are indebted to the philanthropists who generously made these positions possible.
Drs. Salpy Pamboukian, Suzanne Oparil, Tom McElderry, Jose Tallaj, Andre Ballesteros-Tato, Doug Morgan, and Gang Liu were among those recognized at the SOM reception.
Read more1917 Clinic Sets Sights on New Location
Our 1917 Clinic will relocate to a much larger space in Birmingham's Lakeview district late next year or possibly early 2021. As the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama and one of the country’s preeminent HIV clinics, 1917 cares for more than 3,600 active patients. The new clinic space will incorporate a full pharmacy, activity space for physical exercise and classes, as well as a resource center with access to computers and meeting space specifically designed for patient use.
