Top Box Docs Honored at Reception
UAB Medicine held a reception on Monday in honor of physicians that excelled in patient communication during the 2017-2018 measurement period. The Department of Medicine had over fifty clinicians earn this recognition for “Top Box” Scores of 95 or higher. Kudos to all for this phenomenal achievement! View Honorees.

The annual service event sponsored by the resident wellness committee offers residents an opportunity to make a difference for cancer patients outside of the hospital. They report it was a wonderful way to spend #TacoTuesday.
IM Residents Join the DOM for Holiday Fun at BMA
The Department was delighted to ring in the season with a special evening at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Sunday. Music by live jazz guitarist Cashmere Williams and a special showing of the Cargo Collection, made the holiday celebration merry and bright. Warm holiday wishes to all who couldn’t enjoy the fun!
Tele-ICU Program Saves Lives in Selma

Stigler and Johnson in the Tele-ICU bunker.Thanks to the new Tele-ICU initiative led by Steve Stigler, MD (Associate Professor) and Jim Johnson, MD (Professor), patients in the Intensive Care Unit at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma have access to intensive care that is saving lives. By operating a remote “round and respond” service, UAB’s expert critical care faculty have worked with physicians and nurses in Selma to improve patient outcomes, reducing risk-adjusted mortality by nearly 50% and allowing more patients to be treated at Vaughan without transferring to UAB.
Doppalapudi Presents “Heart Clinic” at GWC High School
Harish Doppalapudi, MD (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) recently participated in an exciting community education partnership with UAB Heersink School of Medicine students which presented a "Heart Clinic" to tenth-graders at George Washington Carver High School. The highlight was the hands-on portion of the workshop where each high-schooler was able to learn and practice taking a blood pressure reading. This program is part of the Academies of Birmingham initiative which prepares students in Birmingham city schools for college and professional careers.
