Medical students are encouraged to rotate through our emergency department to gain an appreciation of the wide variety of acute and chronic diseases seen at UAB Hospital.

Participating in a visiting student rotation does not guarantee an interview with the UAB Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Each student will be given a mentor through our SLOE program. We recommend that visiting student express their interest in our program to the faculty and residents they are working with, all of whom have the opportunity to be involved the Emergency Medicine Residency recruitment process. We also encourage students to meet with their sloe mentor while on rotation outside of shift to discuss career goals.

Fourth year visiting students from any US allopathic or osteopathic school are welcome to apply. Visiting student applications are initiated and processed through the UAB Heersink School of Medicine registrar’s office. Students interested in the rotation must complete the online application through the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunity (VSLO) website. All applications are reviewed and selected through the VSLO platform.

Dates of rotation are set by the registrar office and are not flexible. Applications will be reviewed early April and acceptances will be made on a rolling basis starting mid-April. Any applications submitted after July 1 will not be reviewed.

For questions regarding eligibility, please contact our education coordinator, Aubrey Luallen at aluallen@uabmc.edu.
