Longitudinal Primary Care Pre-Medical Program
The Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience (CU2RE) Primary Care Pre-Medical Program is a longitudinal program designed to assist Alabama undergraduate students from underserved and rural communities who have the passion to address and meet the primary care needs of their communities. Specifically, the program aims to increase the preparedness of medically underserved and rural undergraduate students to successfully enter medical school and pursue a career as a primary care physician.
The Program Offers:
- Guidance and mentorship in developing a successful medical school application portfolio
- Wide-ranging educational experiences in primary care, leadership, cultural awareness and behavioral health
- A sense of community and the opportunity to participate in collaborative learning with like-minded people
- Financial assistance toward the costs of preparing for, and applying to, medical school
Program Information
- Monthly two-hour virtual workshops or discussions
- Summer programs (virtual, except for field trips) involving weekly workshops and discussions (Dates TBD)
- Minimal work to prepare for sessions or complete program requirements
- Attend two in-person activities, and able to participate in all virtual sessions
Who Can Apply?
- Ideal applicants are current sophmores or juniors, or current seniors planning a gap year before applying to medical school.
- From an underserved community or rural background and/or interest to serve those communities
Program Elements
- Insights and tools necessary for a successful medical school application
- Opportunity to shadow a primary care physician
- Service learning and leadership development
- Mentorship by current medical students and faculty
- Field trips to an outpatient clinic, hospital, etc.
- Enriched educational experiences in behavioral health, social determinants of health, cultural competency, practice transformation, telehealth and working with interprofessional teams
- History and physical exam simualtion experience, and learning modules that enhance knowledge in key area of primary care and CU2RE
- Stipends toward costs associated with preparing for, and applying to, medical school.
CU2RE Is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of an award totaling $7.5 million with 10% financed with nongovernmental sources.
