The family medicine clerkship is a 4-week educational experience that is required for all third-year medical students matriculating at UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Our clerkship program offers both didactic and clinical teaching and is heavily outpatient based in nature. Students can select from a variety of clinical training settings, as the bulk of our clinical teaching is through community volunteer faculty.

Along with the clinical teaching provided during the clerkship, students are taught basic smoking cessation counseling techniques. They are also required to present a family case presentation that helps increase their understanding of family dynamics and its relation to health.
